For anyone who loves birds and nature, Uganda is one of the best places in the world to visit. With over 1,070 bird species, you will find colorful, rare, and even some birds that cannot be seen anywhere else. From deep forests and peaceful swamps to open grasslands and high mountains, the variety of landscapes is just as impressive as the birds themselves. Whether you are new to birdwatching or have years of experience, every moment brings a new discovery. You will hear beautiful bird calls, see birds in flight, and enjoy the calm beauty of nature.

Birds You Should Not Miss

One of the most famous birds found here is the Shoebill Stork. It is a large, rare bird with a beak shaped like a shoe. You can often find it in Mabamba Swamp, a perfect place for birding by canoe. In the forests, you might spot the colorful Green-breasted Pitta or the small and very rare African Green Broadbill. Another favorite is the Great Blue Turaco, known for its bright colors and playful behavior. Uganda is also home to many types of sunbirds, hornbills, kingfishers, and owls. Some birds, called Albertine Rift endemics, are found only in this region, making them extra special for birdwatchers.

Best Places to Go Birdwatching in Uganda

Uganda has many beautiful places where you can enjoy birdwatching. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the top spots. It has over 350 bird species and many that are found nowhere else. Kibale Forest is another great location, where you can see forest birds and also track chimpanzees. Queen Elizabeth National Park has over 600 bird species, making it one of the most bird-rich parks in Africa. Semuliki National Park, located in western Uganda, has birds that are usually found in Central Africa. For a chance to see the Shoebill Stork, a boat ride through Mabamba Swamp is the best option. Each of these places offers something unique for bird lovers.

Best Time to Visit for Birdwatching

You can go birdwatching in Uganda throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. During these months, the weather is better, the trails are easier to walk, and the birds are very active. If you visit between November and April, you will also see migratory birds that come from Europe and Asia. These months offer the highest number of bird species. No matter when you come, you will have a wonderful experience with many birds to see.

Add Wildlife to Your Birding Adventure

One of the best things about a birding safari in Uganda is that you can also see many other wild animals. While watching birds, you may also see elephants, lions, buffaloes, antelopes, or hippos. You can also add special experiences like gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest or chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest to your birding trip. Game drives in parks such as Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls National Park give you the chance to enjoy both birds and large animals in the same tour. Uganda is one of the few places in the world where this is possible.
