If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing a mountain gorilla up close in the wild, Uganda is the place to do it. The lush rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers one of the most unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences in the world.
Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and most of them live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Trekking here means hiking through ancient rainforest with expert guides and spending one magical hour with a gorilla family in their natural habitat.
Bwindi is in southwestern Uganda, near the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You can reach it:
By road: About 9–10 hours from Kampala or Entebbe.
By air: Flights to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips, followed by a short drive to your lodge.
Many travelers also visit Lake Bunyonyi or Queen Elizabeth National Park while in the region.
There are four gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Your lodge should be close to the sector named on your permit.
To go gorilla trekking, you must have a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Permits are limited and often sell out quickly.
Foreign tourists: $800
African residents: $700
East African citizens: UGX 300,000
You can book permits through Dark Hills Uganda.
Gorilla trekking involves hiking in the forest, often in wet or muddy conditions. Here’s what to bring:
Waterproof hiking boots
Long trousers & long-sleeve shirts
Rain jacket or poncho
Garden gloves (for grip)
Insect repellent
Camera (no flash)
Snacks and reusable water bottle
Daypack
You can trek all year, but the best months are:
June to September (peak dry season)
December to February (shorter dry season)
The forest is always green, but dry months make hiking easier and more enjoyable.
Gorilla trekking is not only an amazing experience—it also:
Helps fund conservation and wildlife protection
Provides income for local communities (guides, porters, lodges)
Supports health and education programs in the area
By choosing ethical tourism, you help protect gorillas for future generations.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or thrill seeker, we’ll help you make it unforgettable.
