10-Day Mountain Biking Adventure Uganda

In the morning, you'll be transferred to Fort Portal which is about 6-7 hours, fort portal is located on the edge of Uganda’s rainforest. While the fort is no longer there, the town is famous for its surrounding tea plantations and its stunning location beneath the Rwenzori Mountains. After lunch, we'll take a 26 km bike ride through charming villages and scenic countryside. The day concludes with a relaxing sundowner at one of the area's most beautiful crater lakes.

Set out on a 62 km journey through Uganda’s central region, dotted with stunning crater lakes. These breathtaking landscapes are sure to captivate you. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch by one of the crater lakes before continuing our ride to the main road. Afterward, we'll relax at a typical Ugandan bar with some end-of-the-day drinks while our bikes are loaded onto the van. A 2-hour car transfer will then take us to the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Along the way, we'll cross the equator and pause for a memorable photo. Our night will be spent safari-style, sleeping in tents with wildlife roaming around the camp and the sounds of hippos and hyenas enhancing our star-lit dinner experience.

Experience an exciting day as we cycle through the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to 95 mammal species and over 500 bird species. Pedal along flat, wide gravel roads through the savanna, keeping an eye out for buffaloes, elephants, various antelopes, and the renowned tree-climbing lions with their distinctive black-maned males. Rest assured, our support vehicles will be close by for safety. Spend the night at the park's edge near the Ntungwe River. For those seeking more than cycling, opt for a morning boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, offering excellent chances to observe elephants, buffalo, and a variety of antelopes at the water's edge. The channel is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with one of the world's largest concentrations of hippos and numerous Nile crocodiles.

Today brings a remarkable change of scenery as we leave the flat savanna behind and ascend into the rainforest. Along the way, we'll pass by a charming tea plantation that you can visit. Prepare for a challenging ride with nearly 1,000 meters of ascent ahead. Our destination, Buhoma, is nestled next to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, famous worldwide for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. At an altitude of 1,500 meters, Buhoma serves as the gateway to gorilla tracking experiences. In the afternoon, we'll take a short hike along the river and through the village to explore local community projects.

Today presents another challenging day of climbing, navigating from singletrack paths through rural areas to wide dirt roads cutting through the rainforest. We'll be skirting the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, renowned for its dense bamboo stands and lush ground cover of ferns, vines, and other foliage that make direct access on foot difficult. This forest is also home to half of the world’s population of highly endangered mountain gorillas. As we ascend, we'll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. We may encounter various monkeys along the way, and with luck, even a family of mountain gorillas. Starting our day at 1,500 meters and finishing at 2,300 meters, anticipate a cool evening as the sun sets. Tonight, our accommodations will be basic cottages offering superb views overlooking the forest.

Today's journey takes us cycling through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest until we emerge into more populated areas. While we'll descend more than we climb overall, there are still significant hills to conquer. Once out of the forest, we'll pass by impressive terraced fields where locals cultivate various crops. Keep an eye out for Lake Bunyoni in the distance, known as "the place of little birds." It's believed to be Africa’s second deepest lake, dotted with 29 islands of varying sizes and shapes. We'll enjoy lunch on the lake shore before getting on a 1-hour boat ride to a serene island where we'll spend the night.

After breakfast, we'll set off for about 4-5 hours to cover some good kilometers to reach Lake Mburo National Park. We'll stop for lunch at Igongo Cultural Center, dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of southwest Uganda, especially the Ankole region, with artifacts, a cultural village replica, and extensive information. Following lunch, we'll make our way to Lake Mburo, where we'll camp near the park entrance. Enjoy dinner amidst the sounds of wildlife echoing in the background. For those interested, an optional night safari drive will be available to experience the park after dark.

Start your day with breakfast while enjoying views overlooking the park, where animals often graze nearby in the early morning. After breakfast, we'll take a short cycling trip of about 25-30km along the borders of the park. Get ready to encounter zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes along the way! In the afternoon, we'll begin our 4-hour journey back to Entebbe. We'll pass the equator for the second time, making a brief stop to mark the occasion.
