First of all, there is no need to panic. We would like to reassure all travelers that safety and well-being remain our highest priority. We are closely following the recent health updates regarding Ebola cases in Uganda and want to share clear, accurate, and honest information. Our goal is to keep all visitors informed, calm, and confident while planning or traveling to Uganda, which continues to be one of Africa’s top safari destinations.
Uganda has recently confirmed two imported Ebola cases linked to the ongoing outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to health authorities, there is currently no confirmed local transmission within Uganda. Both cases involve Congolese nationals who entered Uganda seeking medical treatment. One patient, a 59-year-old man, was admitted in Kampala and later passed away, while the second confirmed case is currently receiving treatment under strict isolation and monitoring. In response, Ugandan health authorities have identified and are closely monitoring 103 contacts connected to these cases, as part of strong containment and public health safety measures.
What Is Ebola and How It Spreads
Ebola is a serious but rare disease that is often misunderstood. It spreads only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person who is already showing symptoms, such as blood, vomit, stool, saliva, or other secretions. It can also spread through contaminated objects that have been in contact with these fluids. Importantly, Ebola does not spread through air, water, food in restaurants, or casual contact such as sitting near someone or sharing public spaces.
Because transmission requires very close and direct contact, the risk to travelers remains very low. Uganda’s health system, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), has already activated strict response measures. These include rapid contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, continuous monitoring of contacts, and enhanced surveillance systems to ensure any potential risk is quickly identified and controlled.
Current Situation in Uganda
It is important to clearly understand the situation on the ground. At this time, there is no confirmed community spread of Ebola within Uganda. The confirmed cases are imported from outside the country, and all identified contacts are under close observation by trained health teams. Border points, especially in high-risk areas near the Democratic Republic of Congo, have increased screening and monitoring procedures to ensure early detection and prevention of any further spread.
Uganda has a strong history of successfully managing and containing Ebola outbreaks in the past. In previous situations, the country has responded quickly and effectively, often bringing outbreaks under control within a short period of time. This success is due to experienced health professionals, strong surveillance systems, and close cooperation with international health partners.
