The Ivy River Trail is an exciting outdoor adventure in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Most travelers only visit Bwindi for mountain gorilla trekking, but this beautiful forest walking safari lets you experience the ancient African rainforest on foot. This guided day trip connects the northern part of the park to the southern side. Your walk starts in the Buhoma sector and takes you straight through the middle of the jungle until you reach the high hills of the Nkuringo sector. Instead of driving for hours on bumpy dirt roads around the park, this scenic day hike lets you walk through a wild forest filled with amazing plants and animals.

Spot Wild Animals and Rare Birds

As you walk quietly along the old forest paths, you will enjoy a wonderful primate safari and birding tour. Because you are walking without the noise of a car engine, you can get very close to nature. Look up into the green trees to spot playful red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and families of baboons. This deep jungle is also home to forest elephants and wild forest hogs. For travelers who love birdwatching, you can spot many colorful birds along the scenic Ivy River, including the giant Great Blue Turaco, bright sunbirds, and rare local forest birds.

Beautiful Rainforest Scenery and Local Culture

The views on this Bwindi nature walk change beautifully as you move along. You will start your walk through the green hills of Buhoma, go down into deep valleys, cross clear forest streams, and walk under massive, ancient trees. As you get closer to the Nkuringo side, the trail leads to high viewpoints where you can look out over the misty forest canopy. This is the perfect place for beautiful travel photography. This path is also special because local village communities have used it as a foot path for generations. You can see how local people live and easily add a cultural visit to meet the traditional Batwa community.

Trail Difficulty and Best Time to Visit

This moderate hiking tour takes about 5 to 7 hours to complete and is open for visitors all year round. The best walking conditions happen during the dry seasons from June to September and from December to February when the hiking paths are less muddy. To keep your forest walk comfortable, we recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots and bringing a light rain jacket, a water bottle, and binoculars.
