When most people plan a trip to Uganda, they usually think about seeing mountain gorillas in Bwindi or chimpanzees in Kibale. While those are amazing experiences, there’s another rare and exciting primate that many visitors don’t know about: the golden monkey. Found only in the Virunga Mountains, these beautiful monkeys with golden-orange fur are just as fascinating to watch. And the best part? You can track them right here in Uganda, in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. We offer guided golden monkey tracking adventures that give you a chance to discover one of Uganda’s best-kept wildlife secrets.

What It’s Like to Track Golden Monkeys
Your golden monkey tracking journey begins at the Ntebeko Visitor Center inside Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Located at an altitude of 2,227 to 4,127 meters (7,306 to 13,540 feet) above sea level, the park is part of the majestic Virunga mountain range. The high elevation provides a cool, refreshing climate and beautiful views of the volcanic peaks. After a short safety briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you will begin your trek through the bamboo forest. The walk usually takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the monkeys’ location. Once you find a troop, you will spend one hour observing their playful behavior and taking photos in their natural habitat.
How Much Does It Cost?
Golden monkey tracking is also more affordable than gorilla trekking. A permit costs $60 USD for foreign non-residents, $50 USD for foreign residents, and around UGX 40,000 for East African citizens. For travelers who want to spend more time with these unique primates, there’s the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience, which gives you several hours with a semi-habituated troop. This experience usually costs between $100 and $150 USD, depending on the season. Dark Hills Uganda can help you organize your permits, park entry, transport, and accommodations, so your adventure is smooth from start to finish.
Best Time to Go and What to Pack
Golden monkey tracking is available all year round, but the best time to visit is during Uganda’s dry seasons: June to August and December to February. These months offer easier trails, better weather, and clearer views. Because of the park’s high altitude, temperatures are cooler than in many parts of Uganda, so we recommend dressing in warm, layered clothing, along with strong hiking boots. Bring a rain jacket, insect repellent, snacks, drinking water, and a camera (without flash). Dark Hills Uganda’s experienced guides will make sure you are fully prepared for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Discover Uganda’s Hidden Wildlife Treasure
Gorillas and chimps may get all the attention, but golden monkey tracking is an unforgettable experience that offers something different, fewer crowds, lively primates, and the peaceful beauty of a high-altitude bamboo forest. With Dark Hills Uganda, you will explore one of the most scenic corners of the country and meet a primate species that few travelers get to see. It’s fun, family-friendly, and deeply rewarding. So, when you think of Uganda, don’t just think gorillas, think golden monkeys too.
