About the Park

Kibale National Park is a beautiful rainforest in western Uganda near Fort Portal. It covers about 760–800 square kilometres and sits at 1,100 to 1,600 metres above sea level. The park is mostly covered in dense forest, swamps, and grassland. It is one of the last big forests in eastern Africa where both lowland and mountain forest species live.

Kibale is famous as the “primate capital of the world.” Visitors come here for chimpanzee trekking, forest walks, bird watching, and wildlife safaris. The park is a top destination for anyone who wants to see wild chimpanzees and other primates in their natural home.

WILDLIFE AND HABITATS

Kibale has over 13 types of primates, including chimpanzees, red-colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. Other animals like forest elephants, bush pigs, and small antelopes also live in the forest. The park is home to over 370 bird species, making it perfect for bird watchers. Forest trails, streams, bamboo areas, and swamps create many different habitats for wildlife.

HOW TO GET THERE

Kibale is about 330 km from Kampala, which is a 6–7 hour drive through beautiful hills. The nearest town is Fort Portal, about 25 km from the park entrance. You can also fly to Fort Portal and drive a short distance to the park. Inside the park, trails are used for trekking and forest walks. Some trails can be muddy, especially during the rainy season.

ENTRY FEES AND PERMITS

For Kibale, there is no general park entry fee. Visitors only pay for chimpanzee trekking permits, which must be booked in advance. Prices depend on whether you are a foreign visitor, an African resident, or a Ugandan citizen. The permit includes a guided chimpanzee trek through the forest.
