Located in north western Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park spans approximately 3,893 square kilometers, making it the largest protected wildlife area in the country. It covers the districts of Masindi, Nwoya, Kiryandongo and Buliisa. The park is renowned for the spectacular Murchison Falls where the mighty Victoria Nile forces itself through a narrow gorge and plunges about 43 meters, creating one of the most breathtaking natural sights in Uganda.
Dark Hills Uganda offers visitors a chance to explore this magnificent park in comfort and style. The park is about 300 to 320 kilometers from Kampala, which is roughly a five to six hour drive. Visitors can enjoy vast savannah plains, riverine forests, wetlands, and woodlands that support a rich variety of wildlife and more than 450 species of birds. Murchison Falls National Park is one of the top destinations for safaris, wildlife tours, and bird watching in Uganda.
WILDLIFE AND HABITATS
Murchison Falls National Park is home to a wide range of wildlife and diverse habitats. The savannah plains, woodlands, riverbanks, and forest patches support elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes including the rare Rothschild giraffe, leopards, Uganda kobs, warthogs and many more. The Victoria Nile is home to hippos and crocodiles, while bird watchers can enjoy sightings of shoebill storks, African fish eagles, grey crowned cranes and numerous species of kingfishers and hornbills.
Dark Hills Uganda provides guided tours that take you through these extraordinary habitats. Visitors can enjoy wildlife safaris, bird watching excursions, and nature walks along the river and forest trails.
HOW TO GET THERE AND ACCESS
By road, visitors from Kampala can travel via Masindi to Paraa gate, covering approximately 305 kilometers with a journey time of around five to six hours. Alternative routes include traveling through Karuma Bridge and the Chobe or Tangi gates.
Domestic flights, charter flights to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrips are available for a faster travel option. Within the park, the Victoria Nile divides the northern and southern sections, connected by a vehicle ferry at Paraa. A four by four vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season when some roads can become challenging.
