Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a special wildlife destination located in Nakasongola District, about 170 kilometers north of Kampala along the Kampala–Gulu highway. Covering around 70 square kilometers, it is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos in their natural habitat. The sanctuary was established in 2005 through a partnership between Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda’s wild after they had become extinct due to poaching and conflict.
Today, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to over 30 southern white rhinos and plays an important role in Uganda’s wildlife conservation efforts. The sanctuary’s peaceful savannahs, woodlands, and swamps also host a wide range of birds and other animals, making it an ideal stopover for travelers heading to Murchison Falls National Park or exploring central Uganda. Visitors can enjoy guided rhino trekking, bird watching, nature walks, and even canoe rides to spot the rare shoebill stork.
WILDLIFE AND HABITATS
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is best known for its thriving population of southern white rhinos, which you can track safely on foot with a professional ranger. The sanctuary also supports other wildlife, including Uganda kobs, bushbucks, oribis, waterbucks, hippos, warthogs, and many small mammals.
The wetlands and acacia woodlands create perfect conditions for birdlife, with more than 300 bird species recorded. This includes the shoebill stork, African fish eagle, giant kingfisher, and grey crowned crane. The combination of open grasslands and wetlands makes Ziwa a haven for both wildlife lovers and bird watchers who want a close and calm nature experience.
HOW TO GET THERE AND ACCESS
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is easily accessible by road, located about 3 to 4 hours’ drive from Kampala along the Kampala–Gulu highway. Visitors turn off at Nakitoma Trading Center and follow a short 7-kilometer dirt road to the sanctuary entrance. The roads are generally good, but during the rainy season a 4x4 vehicle is recommended.
There are no scheduled flights directly to the sanctuary, so road travel is the best option. Once inside, all experiences such as rhino trekking, birding, and nature walks are done on foot with a guide, ensuring safety and an authentic connection with nature.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is open all year, but the dry seasons from December to February and June to September are the best times for walking safaris and rhino tracking, as the trails are drier and easier to navigate.
During the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November, the area becomes greener and birdlife is most active, but some paths can be muddy. Regardless of the season, Ziwa offers an enjoyable and peaceful wildlife experience.

Visitors can stay within or near the sanctuary, with options ranging from comfortable lodges to budget guesthouses and campsites. The Ziwa Rhino Lodge offers cozy rooms, delicious meals, and easy access to trekking activities. Staying overnight allows visitors to enjoy early morning walks and sunset views across the savannah.
